Join this module if you want to achieve knowledge of English as a lingua franca.

Exchange Programme

Possible Combinations

This course can be combined with either English - Processes of language acquisition and communicative competences (M2) to make a 20 ECTS semester and/or Traineeship in Social Work to a maximum of 30 ECTS for the entire semester exchange.

Target Group

Students of Education – Teacher Education, English as a second language or related disciplines

Purpose

Plan, carry out, evaluate, and develop teaching with focus on English as lingua franca and literature reading.

Awareness of genre differences and global Englishes.

Apply differentiated and motivational teaching strategies to didactic designs for various class levels and pupils.

Evaluate pupils’ interlanguage development by analysing pupils’ products.

Work with learning goals and assessment.

Proof of English proficiency

All applicants for this offer must show proof of English language proficiency corresponding to a minimum of B2 on the CEFR scale. This can be done by submitting one of the accepted language certificates through the application form.

The accepted certificates and minimum requirements are:

  • IELTS: Minimum score: 6.5
  • TOEFL internet-based test: Minimum score: 83
  • Cambridge ESOL examinations: Advanced/CAE or Proficiency/CPE - Grade: C, B or A
  • Cambridge ESOL examinations First Certificate: Grade: A
  • Oxford Online Placement test: Minimum score: 75 overall + 75 in each subtest

The submitted certificates must not be older than 3 years to be considered valid.
If the applicant does not upload an English test, they will automatically be invited to complete an online test issued by UCL. Applicants may also be invited for an online interview upon our request.

Teaching Methods

All teaching and counselling is in oral and written English. You will experience several different teaching methods such as lectures, presentations, dialogue, exchange of experiences, group work, independent studies, as well as portfolio work.

Conditions

In order to complete the module and obtain a certificate, the student has to:

  • attend and participate actively in class.

Tuition Fee

Workload

Attend and actively participate in classes, individual study of the relevant literature, pair work, group work, assignments, prepare and present presentations.

Learning Outcome

  • Awareness of genre differences and global Englishes.
  • Apply differentiated and motivational teaching strategies to didactic designs for various class levels and pupils.
  • Evaluate pupils’ interlanguage development by analysing pupils’ products.
  • Work with learning goals and assessment.

The examination is the presentation of a portfolio.

The student will be awarded a grade of pass or fail.
